Are We Living Through Our Computers

February 6th, 2010

For the past quarter of a century or more we have been relying on computers to get us through our day. More so lately, with the advances in technology, computers are becoming devices that we can’t live without. The introduction of the Internet has made us more addicted to our computers than before.

I remember when we would meet friend or co-workers for Happy Hour after work and that to me was social networking. Today, it’s MySpace, Facebook and Internet dating. While I have found many a friends and family members on Facebook, I feel that these “social networking sites” are taking over our daily lives.

With email and instant messaging now at our fingertips, what’s the need to write a letter and “snail” mail it to someone you want to correspond with? The personal touches are gone and home telephones for some are a thing of the past. Today’s society is relying on the Internet and their cell phones to keep them connected.

With the introduction to the IPhone, we can now access the Internet directly unlike before when we had to go through our phone for the “mobile internet” version. Who could have known when the first portable “brick” cell phone was introduced that we would be where we are today. What does the future have waiting for us; I can’t even imagine.

Laptops are getting smaller and more powerful with each passing year. Many of those “children” who were young when laptop computers were first introduced, are some of the wizards in mobile computing design of today. Their remarkable innovations are taking us into wireless world we only dreamed of in the not so distant past.

Children have no fear of the unknown and that makes them great at computers. They are designing newer and better ways to allow us to be productive. Computer geniuses are in abundance for the under eighteen crowd and yours could be one of them. Maybe you have another Bill Gates on your hands.

One downfall I see with computers is that we don’t ever need to leave our homes. We can order pizzas, shop for birthdays and Christmas online, we even send our birthday greeting from the Internet. We don’t develop pictures, we send them via email, check our bank statements and it’s all done with the click of the mouse. But what about getting to know the banker the postman or your photo developer?

I often wonder where this new technological craze is going to take our grandchildren. What kind of a society are we becoming when we never leave our homes for the social interaction we were once so fond of. While we have this ability to do all these things from home, what’s in-store for our children’s children?

Teaching our kids that enjoying time on the computer is good for some things. Use the World Wide Web to explore other worlds within their grasp. They can have a better future if they choose to use the Internet to their advantage and find a world outside their bedroom. Getting involved in helping to make a better world for themselves and their children is a great place to start.
