Compaq laptop chargers – why is OEM always the best option?

July 1st, 2011

When it comes to laptop chargers, why is an OEM replacement always the best option? Two reasons – quality and compatibility. The average laptop owner will have spent around 300-400 on their new laptop so to keep that in proper working order and to get the best value for money out of it, it should be ‘fed’ by the best accessories possible.

The Compaq laptop charger that came with your laptop was specifically designed to do the job of powering the laptop and charging the battery. Why deviate from the products designed to be used on it and then fix a lesser quality article in its place. You wouldn’t have a petrol car and then go and put diesel in it!

Cost may be the driving factor in deciding upon a new Compaq Adapter and with vast differences in the price of these items a sub-10 choice may get your vote. These options tend to be the poorest quality and whilst it may seem good value you will be lucky to get more than a few months use out of the item.

The original manufacturer’s products will be of far better quality. If the charger is exactly the same as the version that was supplied with your laptop, it is ideal for the job. You will have to pay more for these chargers – sometimes 10 times as much – but it is worth it, because they are fit for purpose and should continue working efficiently for far longer.

It is commonly known that some Compaq laptops need adapter technology that allows the laptop to recognise there is a charger plugged in. This is called ‘Smart Tip’ or ‘Chipped Tip’. Some laptop chargers will have this technology and some will not.

This is why original equipment manufacturer (OEM) adaptors are the best option, whether for the Compaq Presario, Compaq Evo, or whatever. By getting a charger made by the same company who make your laptop, you guarantee that you are getting an item of the best possibly quality. These products can be found from independent retailers, where they are generally cheaper than if you go to the manufacturer directly.

Rewards of Overclocking Your Computer

March 27th, 2010

There are various advantages to overclocking your hardware peripherals. It can be stated to profit pc owners that have low-priced computer models. Overclocking increases the speed of any computer hardware peripheral a lot more than the limit set by the maker. By overclocking, the small end hardware is built to execute just as its higher end version does. Some pc enthusiasts that have invested in the new top quality types also overclock their computer hardwares as a way to push them to execute significantly superior. Besides speed benefits, overclocking presents better signal strength which allows your hardware to perform at a superior level.

Take the several 3.0 gigahertz Pentium 4, its owner can overclock it to 3.4 gigahertz. By accomplishing this, he has on his hands now a personal computer that operates specifically like the real Pentium 4 3.4 gigahertz without having to pay for an upgrade or a brand new computer. With overclocking, you can actually test drive an upcoming model or perhaps one that has just been released, that you might be planning on buying in the future.

You’ll be able to overclock just about everything on your computer, the graphics, memory, and processors. Even though still on experimentation, PCI, AGP ( accelerated graphics port), USB and serial ports of older pc versions have the possibility of being overclocked. Anyone who owns older versions of a personal computer, should use caution to not overclock their hardware.

Bear in mind, you should overclock your system in increasing level, beginning at minimum speed modification. An abrupt program modification thru oveclocking can cause significant damages to your pc. It has been documented that some computers experienced information loss, repeated boot failure, as well as system crashing. By overclocking just a step at a time you’re far more likely to be able assess your computer’s overclocking limit.

Increase speed only after you’ve put your system thru thorough efficiency program testing and after you ascertain your computer’s stability of the present modification. On the internet, you are able to come find web-sites and businesses which offer CPU tests for stability. It is possible to find a reputable internet site to find a product for CPU testing.

Problems with overheating can be prevented from taking place by ensuring adequate peripheral cooling to sustain reduced temperatures. Always keep your CPU cool, and the majority of the time, everything will be alright.

Gaming computers also profit very much from overclocking. When you get a quicker higher performance level, you will encounter less complications (or even none whatsoever) with online game loading (and web page loading for on the web games), game effectiveness, and others. Those who prefer to play computer games, even the online ones, will undoubtedly have an enhanced experience with gaming.

Batteries – From Laptops to Motorcycles

February 14th, 2010

What would you do without them? Seriously, if every single battery of every single type were suddenly zapped out of every single thing that it operated, what would any of us do?

Laptop computers, without a doubt, are the lifeblood of many a businessperson today. Portable, convenient, they allow us to work on the run and do more business. Laptop batteries are essential to keep this resource working, as it should.

The precursor to the laptop as we know it today was introduced by IBM back in 1986 and was called “The PC Convertible”. It weighed five and a half kilograms and cost around $3500.00.

As laptop computers have evolved, so too have laptop batteries.

The first type of battery used in laptops was Nickel- Cadmium (NiCad). These can still be found in some older laptops. Their lifespan between recharges is about two hours, however, this decreases with each recharge. Also, if a NiCad laptop battery is charged for too long it may explode.

The next type of laptop battery used was Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). These laptop batteries last longer than NiCad batteries but their total lifespan is shorter.

The current standard laptop battery is the Li-ion battery. As well as being light and having a long life span they can also be randomly charged and won’t overheat if charged for too long. Being thinner, the Li-ion battery is ideal as a notebook battery and can last for between 950 and 1200 recharges.

Perhaps even more crucial to our business life as well as our personal life is the cell phone. There are also three different types of cell phone batteries:

Lithium-ion Batteries: these are the newest type of cell phone battery and, while having certain advantages over the older NIMH and NICD batteries, care must still be taken to ensure they perform at their best. For example, a new lithium-ion battery should be “conditioned”. What this basically means is that for the battery’s first three charge cycles, fully charge the battery overnight and allow it to fully discharge before charging it again. This will increase the life and effectiveness of the cell phone battery.

NIMH Batteries: These batteries also should be conditioned in the same way as a Lithium-ion battery. It is important to remember that extensive overcharging (i.e.: on a battery charger for more than twenty-four hours) can damage these cell phone batteries.

NICD Batteries: These are the oldest type of cell phone battery and, as is the case with the laptop computer, are less reliable than the newer types.

Okay, so we know we’d be sunk without our laptops and cell phones. But what about the car? Cars have batteries too. Perhaps you ride a Harley Davidson – not without a motorcycle battery! It’s interesting to think where we’d be if the afore-mentioned “zapping episode” took place. We know that our forefathers coped without batteries but could we?

Here’s a challenge: For one whole day leave everything containing a battery alone. No driving or riding, no cell phone or computer, completely “battery-bereft”. At the end of the day you’ll either feel tranquil and centred, at total peace with your surroundings or a nervous wreck, climbing the walls.

Which will you be?

Tips For Buying Laptops Online

February 7th, 2010

Buying computers at computer stores may soon become an antiquated practice as more and more consumers look online to make their laptop purchases. Indeed, many sites allow you the ability to customize your computer online with just a few mouse clicks, making online purchases an attractive proposition.

But for the less tech saavy, pre-built laptops are probably still the best way to go. Many times, when you buy a laptop that has been premade, you can get exceptional deals because of the lower cost of manufacturing associated with these computers.

It’s not always easy to know exactly where to make your purchase, however. Some people like Ebay because of the low cost, but I would caution against buying a computer there because you can never be sure what you are getting. Many Ebay sellers get their goods for China, which raises concerns over authenticity.

An easier and in most cases superior way to shop online is to stick to a large site like Amazon. You will typically have a better selection as well as better prices by only shopping at the well known online outlets.

But don’t make the mistake of just purchasing your computers online. The internet is also a great place to conduct research on what model you want. Many places will provide user reviews which can really help you decide if the laptop you’re interested in is worth it. A little research done before you spend your hard earned cash can definitely save you a lot of hassle later on.

Some of the most important things to pay attention to when buying a laptop are 1) the reputation of the manufactures 2) the specs and 3) upgradeability. Of course, cost is also an issue for many consumers, but increasingly you will find that there is not too much of a price difference between manufacturers, so don’t let price dictate your purchase decision.

If you are unsure of which model Laptop to get, I recommend the HP G60 and the highly popular Dell Inspiron 1545.

Are We Living Through Our Computers

February 6th, 2010

For the past quarter of a century or more we have been relying on computers to get us through our day. More so lately, with the advances in technology, computers are becoming devices that we can’t live without. The introduction of the Internet has made us more addicted to our computers than before.

I remember when we would meet friend or co-workers for Happy Hour after work and that to me was social networking. Today, it’s MySpace, Facebook and Internet dating. While I have found many a friends and family members on Facebook, I feel that these “social networking sites” are taking over our daily lives.

With email and instant messaging now at our fingertips, what’s the need to write a letter and “snail” mail it to someone you want to correspond with? The personal touches are gone and home telephones for some are a thing of the past. Today’s society is relying on the Internet and their cell phones to keep them connected.

With the introduction to the IPhone, we can now access the Internet directly unlike before when we had to go through our phone for the “mobile internet” version. Who could have known when the first portable “brick” cell phone was introduced that we would be where we are today. What does the future have waiting for us; I can’t even imagine.

Laptops are getting smaller and more powerful with each passing year. Many of those “children” who were young when laptop computers were first introduced, are some of the wizards in mobile computing design of today. Their remarkable innovations are taking us into wireless world we only dreamed of in the not so distant past.

Children have no fear of the unknown and that makes them great at computers. They are designing newer and better ways to allow us to be productive. Computer geniuses are in abundance for the under eighteen crowd and yours could be one of them. Maybe you have another Bill Gates on your hands.

One downfall I see with computers is that we don’t ever need to leave our homes. We can order pizzas, shop for birthdays and Christmas online, we even send our birthday greeting from the Internet. We don’t develop pictures, we send them via email, check our bank statements and it’s all done with the click of the mouse. But what about getting to know the banker the postman or your photo developer?

I often wonder where this new technological craze is going to take our grandchildren. What kind of a society are we becoming when we never leave our homes for the social interaction we were once so fond of. While we have this ability to do all these things from home, what’s in-store for our children’s children?

Teaching our kids that enjoying time on the computer is good for some things. Use the World Wide Web to explore other worlds within their grasp. They can have a better future if they choose to use the Internet to their advantage and find a world outside their bedroom. Getting involved in helping to make a better world for themselves and their children is a great place to start.

Common Computer Lingo

February 5th, 2010

The world is in the cusp of an advanced technological era, with advances in all the different technological fields happening regularly, the computer technology field in particular. While it is true that most of the people in modern society know about and even make use of computers, only some of them know the ins and outs of the machine; let alone what specific terms and uses each element that a computer has.

First is the most common computer term out there: PC. PCs or personal computers are basically that piece of technology that makes up a system of software and hardware. This computer can be used in a multitude of important ways, for instance data encoding and viewing, going into the World Wide Web, as well as for storing all your information such as documents, text files, pictures, audio and videos.

Way back in the day, the PC was a huge, rigid and bulky thing placed on the floor of a large room. The modern times brought about a smaller version of this machine which can easily fit on any flat surface, such as a desk; hence the term desktop computer.

However, contrary to popular belief, PCs are not just desktops. They are also those even more compact yet equally capable machines that are infinitely smaller and more movable than previous older models of the PCs.

Examples of these mobile computers are the laptops and notebooks, which are basically smaller machines that owners can bring with them virtually anywhere they want. At present, computer manufacturers and designers are coming up with even smaller machines that are just as efficient despite being smaller than other machines.

People are also confused with the computer term servers. This is understandable since the term servers have a lot of meanings. First is the file server, a computer system that is linked to other machines through the use of a network. What the file server does is it permits users of the other machines to store and access data into the machine wherever they are.

On the other hand, network servers are machines that are designed to process and also to deliver information to the other connected computers through the use of a local network scheme or through the use of an internet connection. These network servers are also capable of dealing with the probable massive user load through its processing, memory and storage configurations. The web server and proxy server are common kinds of a network server.

Lastly, you have the business server, the machine that is specially designed to cater to business purposes. These computers feature links to printers, fax machines, mobile support features, restore options, remote connectivity and business intranet.

Conventional Laptop Pc Misconceptions Explained

December 15th, 2009

Laptops have become incredibly popular in today’s technologically advancing society, and they are often necessary for school or work. PC notebooks have become essential to many college students and professionals. Some schools require students to have a notebook computer and others give students one when they enroll. It is surprising that so many odd myths still persist about these small computers.

Notebook computers were launched onto the market in the early nineteen eighties, but this type of computer was not used often until the nineteen nineties. Today’s portable computers come in a wide range of styles with many different functions. One of the newest variations on the portable computer is the netbook. The netbook is a small PC that has been designed to take with you to log onto the Internet while you are out and about. Portable computers are now smaller than ever, and oddly myths persist about these small computers. You may be surprised by the following myths.

Myth 1: PC Laptops are much more expensive than desktop PCs

This myth is simply false; notebook PCs come in many different styles with different functions and different prices to match. Of course there are expensive laptops out there, but there are also expensive desktops out there. The tiny netbooks are prices quite low; they are often hundreds of dollars less than a desktop PC. The type of portable computer you need will determine how much it will cost; the same can be said for desktop computers.

Myth 2: Laptop batteries do not last long enough to use them when you do not have a power outlet.

This was once true, but batteries have come a long way in recent years; technology has made many advances since the first portable computers were released. You will normally get a good six to eight hours of battery time out of today’s batteries. It is still true that the older your battery gets the less time it will stay charged for though. It is no longer necessary to charge your battery several times a day because they last much longer.

Myth 3: Desktops have more features.

Portable computers today have just as many features as desktop computers and they can be customized to suit your needs. These portable PCs can be upgraded with better graphics cards for gamers or better sound cards for music lovers. They also come with built-in webcams and microphones to make connecting with peers easy while you are on the go.

Portable computers have made many changes since they were introduced in the nineteen eighties, and the changes have been for the better. Today’s notebook PC has wireless connections, a longer battery span, excellent graphics, bigger memory capacity, duel-core or quad-core processors, and lots of other options. They can also be found for reasonably low prices. It is time to re-think the myths.
