What To Look For In A Web Design Company

August 30th, 2009

Web design is often argued about by competing web design companies. Often colleagues and peers will criticize each others practices. web design companies are able to do so because the businesses and individuals that employ them are usually uninformed about this young industry.

In actuality web designing is quite arbitrary.

Most web design firms have a unique workflow and way of planning website format, how to manage content, the actual layout of the website and marketing strategy, which is often accomplished through search engine optimization. Web design firms that have strong opinions that contradict your preference or others’ advice should be able to present you with supporting data. Website design service is different with all web design firms, but the issues involved are always the same.

Website Format: Flash or Html

Should you get a flash site or an html site? Flash can look more interesting and move and function like a video game or software. A lot of people and industries are looking for this sort of feel. Html is capable of having this look too, but flash was made for this sort of application. Flash is in general considered to be more high tech, though that is not exactly the case.

Html is used for more conservative or corporate websites by most web design companies. Social media websites heavily rely on html as well. The layout of the site can stretch with additional photos and text.

You may have also heard that html is more compatible with google as far as checking the content if your pages for ranking. You can also use a combination of flash and html for your site. You can incorporate motion graphics or animated flash menus with an organized html framework.

Content Management

Your website is like a bookshelf where you store all of your content for visitors to flip through. Sometimes people only want a website that never changes its content. Most people do need to update their websites, if only every so often.

The best web design companies should be able to build an easy way for you to make changes to your website. Whether you use barebones mysql databases or tweak an existing content management system, the important thing is that is it easy to work with.

Web design firms will all have their own preference for content management. No one way is the right way to do it. If your web design firm is strongly opposed to any one method that you might be interested in, be sure that they supply you with facts to support their claim. If you find something that works well and can grow as your website grows, then it should be fine to incorporate into your site.

Review the current portfolio of the website design company to determine its capabilities. Then discuss with them the possibility of adapting the site as your venture evolves.

How Important Are Meta tags?

August 22nd, 2009

Search engines and people (indirectly) use meta tags.

Are meta tags necessary? Each search engine places its own importance on meta tags. Google never discloses how it utilizes them. There are a good many sites that achieve page one ranking on Google that use no keyword or description tags at all, so take it with a grain of salt when someone tells you they are really essential for Search Engine Optimization. Each search engine has its own method for indexing — some assign meta tags considerable importance, thus it is best not to omit them.

Meta tags are lines of codes that are built into Internet pages. These code lines can’t be seen on the web browser (but look at what is said about the description tag, below), however, the search engine uses them to group your web pages accurately. They can have either descriptions, titles, or keywords. You don’t have to use descriptions and keywords, however your website will appear strange if you don’t use a “title” tag, because people will have “Untitled web page” in their browsers.

In the past, people would insert useless or repetitive information in their meta tags, trying to receive more traffic. So to stop people from cheating, not a lot of weight is assigned to a meta tag’s keywords these days; however, they are still checked for relevance. You will not be ranked well at all if you stuff them with keywords that do not pertain to your page.

The “head” section of the web page is where meta tags are located. Some say don’t use any capitalization for keywords, and to stay away from repeating terms in the keyword tag.

Mostly, the real meta tag contents are not visible, but the “description” meta tag’s information will be shown on nearly all of the search engine results as well as the title page when the results are revealed. Avoid repetition of keywords in the description tag, and keep the description text relevant.
